Register for Hack Day

Hack Day @ the HP Big Data Conference is your chance to meet like-minded innovators, crank out a cool app in a matter of hours, and most of all - have fun! In this 8 hour hackathon, teams of 1-3 architects, developers, designers, data scientists, database ninjas, DevOps warriors, IT admins and tech-savvy business folks will join forces in a rapid prototyping sprint and attempt to win the admiration of their peers. 

Participation in this event includes:

Cost: Participation in the Hack Day is free and you do not need to register for the conference to participate in the Hack Day, but it is encouraged (check out the conference here).

Event Road Map

You have only approximately 8 hours to complete a working app, so follow this guide on what you can do to prepare ahead of time and hack your way to win on August 10th.

Pre Event:

  • Register for the event on the Conference website. REGISTER NOW.
  • Add your developer profile to (so that other developers can find you to invite you to join their team).
  • Check out the sponsor challenges (below).
  • Form a team (you can also do this on the day at the event), brainstorm ideas for your app.
  • Sign up and attend the free meet-ups or webinars to get a jumpstart.
  • Check out the free training options from the sponsors.
  • Choose a Big Data theme for your app, or select any of our suggestions below:

    • Data-driven enterprise
  • Check out sample data sets before the event. This could save you time and you can ask questions beforehand for a leg up on the competition.
  • Show up with your team and compete to win on August 10th!


Meetups will help you prepare for Hack Day and it all starts with presentations from developers and technical evangelists who know the technology you need to use. Connect and collaborate with peers and pitch your winning ideas.

About Hack Day:

  • All teams will be competing to win the Hack Day Challenge.
  • We also have Sponsored Challenges with cool prizes up for grabs.
  • Form a team, join an existing team, or enter as a lone ranger.
  • Bring your own app, start from scratch, or start with something Open Source.
  • Bring your own data, add some Open Data, or use any of our canned datasets.
  • Pick your own app host or take advantage of the HP Helion Development Platform.
  • Pick your own data viz tools or choose something from the Haven Marketplace.
  • Your app must be powered by HP Haven in a meaningful way. All code relating to the implementation and use of HP Haven must be fresh code, written during the coding session at the event.
  • Teams will be supported by mentors that will help accelerate your hands-on learning.

  • Create and push your selected app to the HP Helion Development Platform.
  • Set-up a Github code repository open to the judges.

  • Creation of a visually appealing interface via HTML, CSS or other technology will be awarded points.
  • Compatibility of the interface on mobile devices such as iPhone, Android etc will gain extra points.

Freestyle Data Science challenge:

This challenge is a freestyle format for developers wanting to show off their SQL and R skills to produce the most awesome Big Data Insights. Use any of the datasets that have been preloaded into Vertica OnDemand and discover new insights using descriptive and predictive analytics offered in SQL and R.

HP Vertica provides wide array of built-in SQL analytics – aggregation and windowing functions, ROLAP functions, geospatial functions, sentiment analytics functions, pattern matching, gap filling, sessionization and many more.

Besides SQL you will also be provided access to R, HP Distributed R, dplyr and other common predictive algorithm packages, you are free to load additional R packages of your choice.

Show off your coding skills to build an app using any combinations of the 70+ APIs from HP Haven OnDemand.

Haven OnDemand gives you the capability to store, analyze, index, and categorize structured and unstructured data, e.g. analyze tweets, index documents, extract text from audio files, and much, much more. With Haven OnDemand’s REST APIs and officially maintained wrappers, you can use all the popular languages like Java, JavaScript, Python, Ruby, PHP, .Net, Go or Node.js.

The winning app will be judged on the best and most innovative use of the Haven OnDemand APIs. Chaining multiple Haven OnDemand APIs is encouraged for more impressive outcomes.

  • You do not need to attend the HP Big Data Conference 2015 to participate in the Hack Day, but it is encouraged.
  • Teams must have between 1-3 members.

  • How to Win Hack Day:

    • Teams are encouraged to use the sponsors’ technology for their apps. See Sponsored Challenges below for participation details.

    At the end of the 8 hour coding window, teams will have 2 minutes to pitch their app plus 60 seconds to answer Q&A.

    • No slides are permitted, and only working apps will be eligible for the stage presentations.
    • Overall winners will be decided by the participating teams (one vote per team) – support each other, you can’t vote for your own team.
    • Sponsor appointed judges will select a prize winner for teams utilizing their technology in one or more of the Sponsored Challenges.
